Nepal Floods 2026: Are Trekking Routes Safe?

Rasuwa Flash Flood 2026

The recent floods in Nepal have raised an important question among travelers planning a Himalayan adventure: Are trekking routes in Nepal still safe?

On August 26, 2026, a devastating flash flood swept through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors, causing extensive damage across parts of Rasuwa and surrounding areas. Roads, bridges, settlements and other infrastructure were severely affected, disrupting access through the northern Rasuwa corridor.

For trekkers, this is particularly important because Rasuwa is a major gateway to the Langtang region and Gosaikunda, while the same corridor connects communities and travelers heading toward the Nepal–China border. Access around Syabrubesi and other parts of northern Rasuwa has been significantly disrupted.

But here’s the important part:

The floods have not affected every trekking region in Nepal.

Nepal’s major trekking destinations are spread across different valleys and mountain regions. While routes connected to Rasuwa require particular attention, destinations such as Everest, Annapurna and Manaslu are outside the directly affected flood corridor.

So, if you already have a trek planned—or you’re considering visiting Nepal this autumn—don’t cancel your plans based on headlines alone. Check the current condition of your specific destination, access road and trekking route before you travel.

Which Part of Nepal Was Affected by the Floods?

On August 26, a sudden and extremely destructive flood event struck the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems in central Nepal.

The scale of the disaster has been enormous. Rescue operations are continuing, with severe damage reported to settlements, bridges, roads and hydropower infrastructure in Rasuwa and surrounding areas. The disaster also affected the important Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border corridor, while the destruction around Syabrubesi is particularly relevant to trekkers heading toward Langtang.

For the latest official information on the flood and recovery efforts, travelers can refer to the Government of Nepal’s official updates.

Langtang Trek: What Travelers Need to Know

Among Nepal’s popular trekking destinations, Langtang requires the most attention following the recent floods because its traditional gateway, Syabrubesi, lies in Rasuwa.

The flood caused significant damage to roads and infrastructure in the surrounding area, meaning the usual journey from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi may not currently operate as it normally does.

This does not automatically mean that the entire Langtang trekking route is unsafe or permanently closed. The condition of individual roads, bridges and trails needs to be assessed as recovery work continues.

If you have a Langtang trek planned for the coming weeks, don’t rely on an old itinerary or information from before the floods. Check the latest access conditions with your trekking operator before departure.

Depending on the situation, your trekking company may recommend postponing the trek, adjusting the transportation route, modifying the itinerary or choosing an alternative destination.
